The Last Post

Jason was tragically killed while cycling on the A82 near Fort William on 15th January. His death marks the untimely end of a brilliant cycling career.

Jason will be remembered by all who knew him for his determination to excel in cycling, alongside the other passion in his life, his wife and children, who are in our thoughts and prayers.

I offer my sincerest condolences to Mrs McIntyre and your daughters, and to Mr McIntyre's parents and family and all his friends. I know the pain you are going through. My brother Tony Spink was killed on 18th July 2007. He was 41 years old. He was cycling in Wakefield when a lorry hit him and drove off without stopping. There is a criminal trial against the driver which ended on thursday without a verdict. There will be a re-trial.

It has been a terrible ordeal to go through but for justice' sake, my brother's sake, and to help other cyclists I will go through it. I too still cannot believe that Tony has gone and will only begin to come to terms with it after the trial is finally over. But I needed to know exactly what happened to my brother. Why was he killed? Why did the driver do what he did? I want justice for all cyclists and I want to see them being given greater protection on our roads. I want to see other road users give cyclists greater care and respect.

From reading about him, for I never knew him, Mr McIntyre, like my brother, used the greatest gifts he had been given: those were his health and his fitness and his ability to love. He used them to achieve great things on his bike, to enjoy his life and to create, and be a part of a loving family. What more can be given or asked of in this life than that?

I hope you find the strength to go on Mrs McIntyre. People care and I know how tributes and personal messages like this one do help. All my best wishes. Andrew Spink.

dear macintyre's for charity i am going to atempt a sponserd triathilon by myself.all funds raised will go towards your family i am sorry for your and girls loss.i will cycle from the old millitary road to the leisure centre,do 16 to 20 lenths ,then run to the coal shopping centre.and as i mentioned before a funds raised go towards your family.

I would like to write a note to everyone who has taken the time to write there condolences on Jason`s website. I read them when the days are very hard to get through and it gives me a lift to see the effect he had on so many people when he was alive. I read them to Chloe and Morgan and it makes them feel great to know their Dad was a Hero not only to them but to a lot of other people to. I plan to keep Jason`s website going and keep people up to date with the Memorial Fund and how it will be helping the family. We have a lot more ideas to help promote other cycling events. It may take a little while to sort out but please bare with me. I understand a lot of people have been affected by what has happened to Jason and I still feel the utter disbelief that he has been taken from us as he is such a huge presence to lose. Thanks to all the people who came and braved the weather for Jason`s service i just wish i was able to thank you all personally. I am going to the World Track Champs this weekend and will be taking plenty of photos so i will post them on soon. I hope to see you soon at Jason`s Memorial Race on Sat 26th April in Fort William. I still like many find it incredibly hard to come to terms to this day that our Hero has gone.

Not just a hero on the bike but also a true Gentleman in every respect.

I can remember sitting in My friend Ian Mansons car in my skin suit at the strip of 2006 Tour of the campsies.
Was thinking to myself how on earth can i stay away from Jason who was only 3 min behind me......Then all of a sudden a loud thud on the window , as i looked up through the passenger window i could see Jason Shouting 'Comon Stevie its time you got yourself down to the Start'.

As i sat in disbelief how the British Time trial champ made his way over to me in his full kit was unbelievable - who am i to him?? I was shocked he even knew my name!!!
As so pro organised as he was he obviously took the time to find out who was racing with him!

I got up and jumped on the bike and rode down to the start line with him which was only 2-3 miles.
He asked me all sorts of Questions why, how , when , who, what for etc etc etc he took an interest in others and never spoke about himself or what he was about to do within a few minutes from then that day ~ such as completing the tour of the campsies course in Record time!!!

That memory will stay with me forever and has reminded me to be more respectfull to others about you.

Like many others i attended Jasons funeral but i took the time to decide to cycle up from my work the day before from Glasgow Airport about 12:30.

The ride up was rather interesting as i tackled through some pretty heavy wind and rain but after 60 odd miles my fellow team mate Stuart Reid passed by in his lovely warm estate car and gave me a lift for the remaining journey.
Maybe that was enough to repay the kind respect Jason SHowed me at the Tour of the campsies.
That tuesday evening i walked about Fort William talking to the locals and they all said the same thing 'we never realised how good he was'.

One of the locals told me how Jason used to take the bus to Glasgow and cycle his way back up to fort william.

After been hit by a hit and run driver myself it seems that too many cyclists nowadays are hit by cars. Something in the law needs to change. Cyclists that are hit and killed are becoming too frequent, it is so sad to see such a talent as Jason lost. Rest in Peace.

Jason's funeral was an incredibly sad occasion, but I hope there is comfort for his family in the huge number who were there, all of them wanting to pay their respects - and rarely has that word seemed so appropriate. He was respected by all of us in the cycling community - I can only hope that brings some small comfort to his family, including, in time, Chloe and Morgan. They will certainly grow up knowing that their father was somebody special.

RIP Jason, what a terrible tragedy and a great loss. I spoke briefly to Jason just once(after he won the national 25 or 10 I think) and I think it really showed his greatness, that after finishing a ride he came up and spoke to my son(my son asked Jason if he raced bikes.....), who was 3, and never once mention who he was and didn't even expect me to know, it was only when I seen him with his helmet on at the next race that I realised. He was and always will be a true champ, to hear all that he has done for his family is truly humbling. I can't even begin to imagine how his family feel, it is a nightmare we all hope that we never have to face, as meaningless as it seems I would like to offer my sincere condolences to Caroline, Morgan, Chloe, his mum and dad and his sister. Your husband,dad, son and brother was a hero in a lot of peoples eyes.
